Kings Take the Bark Out of Coyotes

By Nick Hamilton (@NickHamiltonLA) for @lavoxdeportiva

The Los Angeles Kings scored at will and often for a 6-0 route of the Arizona Coyotes on Saturday night at Staples Center.

Backup goalie Darcy Kuemper has played outstanding for Los Angeles. He finished with 27 saves on Saturday and picked up his second consecutive shutout.

Kuemper has won three straight starts, hasn't allowed a goal in his last 170 minutes of game time.

Adrian Kempe, Alex Iafallo, Dustin Brown, and Anze Kopitar each had a goal and an assist for the Kings, who have won two in a row against the Pacific Division.

With approximately seven minutes into the first period, Iafallo scored his fifth goal of the season, that gave the Kings a 1-0 lead. He positioned himself on the edge of the crease where he could capitalize on the rebound off Tyler Toffoli's long shot to score.

We need to keep doing that," Iafallo said. "Gives us momentum, and I feel like that helped us out tonight."

The Kings dominated in the second period, as Trevor Lewis scored on a short hand breakaway goal. Later Adrian Kempe scored that made it a 3-0 lead. Late in the second period, Jake Muzzin scored on a power play goal that extended the lead to 4-0.

Kopitar scores in the third period, and now has scored three goals with 12 assists in his last 13 games this season. Brown added an insurance goal late in the period. Arizona has no answer on defense, and struggled to find a rhythm offensively.

“We're going to play teams that scratch and claw,” Coyotes head coach Rick Tocchet said. “You're going to get the best of the best, and if you're not in compete mode — that's my job to get these guys to compete — you get embarrassed."

The Los Angeles victory ended Arizona’s four game consecutive win streak against the Kings.

Goalie Scott Wedgewood made 29 saves for the Coyotes in the loss.

The Kings will face the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday night at Staples Center.
